PALAZZO CHIERICATI

Piazza Matteotti

Palazzo Chiericati was designed by Andrea Palladio for Girolamo Chiericati in 1551. Its construction began soon afterward, with the southern wing. Upon Girolamo Chiericati’s death, the work fell under the direction of his son Valerio who, between 1578 and 1579, also saw to the decoration of the southern wing and of the first intercolumnar section of the planned central sector. The decoration called for the services of fresco artists Domenico Brusasorzi, Giambattista Zelotti, Eliodoro Forbicini, Giannantonio Fasolo, and the stucco artist Bartolomeo Ridolfi.
The construction of the palace, interrupted in 1609 upon the death of Valerio Chiericati, would not be resumed until the final decade of the 1600s, most likely by Giacomo and Carlo Borella, who remained essentially faithful to Palladio’s project.
In 1838, the Palace became the property of the City of Vicenza, becoming the site of the Civic Museum.
The necessary restoration was however concluded only between 1853 and 1855, by Giovanni Miglioranza. Then work began on a vast western wing, designed by Giovanni Bellio (1866-1867). During the 1950s, another building designed by the architect Fausto Franco was added to be used as offices and the library.
