BASILICA PALLADIANA

Piazza dei Signori

The Palladian Basilica is located in Piazza dei Signori and Palladio himself coined the church’s current name: Basilica, to evoke the site where politics and important affairs were dealt with in ancient Rome. Also known as Palazzo delle Ragione, the Basilica is the monument that symbolizes the city of Vicenza. This building encompassed the existing 15th-century Gothic buildings with two rows of loggia (1549-1617), by the architect Palladio. The rhythm of the building is marked by Serlian arches and columns, which constitute a structure consisting of an open archway, flanked by two rectangular side openings of variable widths, thereby capable of absorbing the differences in the width of the arcades, especially at the vertices of the building, while an inverted hull vault in copper covers the Basilica. The monument is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
